this or that

For the first 6 months (okay, let's be real, we've been talking about this for years), we spent a lot of time wondering do we want dark floors or light? cupboards or shelves? stainless or porcelain?

We wandered the aisles of Menards taking pictures of:

Cupboards

Possible finishes

Floors

We were doing fine. Really we were. We picked all the things out and sent pictures of them to C so that he could tell us if they would work. Truthfully we sent these pictures in March of 2017 and then sort of forgot about them. It turns out that if you wait more than a year to start a project with supplies you've already choosen, you might not be able to get said supplies.

A year passed.

We started again. C now gets cabinets from a local-ish supplier. Great! C says we should get our floors at the local flooring store. No problem! C says we have to pick out a sink before the cabinets are ordered. Easy peasy. Also the lighting, the ceiling fan, the faucets and the back splash.

Do you know the feeling of all the energy draining from your body? One minute you are weighing the pros and cons of a four blade fan versus a six blade fan and considering the virtues of the color weathered gray to hide the dirt that will inevitably end up adhered by cooking grease to the top side of those blades and the next minute you can barely hold your body upright. It's as if all the energized atoms have repelled down your legs and tumbled out across the floor leaving you feeling like a damp rag draped over the aforementioned sink. We reached this moment of decision fatigue roughly four seconds after we chose the flooring. The fatigue started with the fan and extended through the sink conversation and is holding on tight through the umpteenth attempt at choosing a back splash.

For the record: 4 blades are fewer to clean than 6 and weather gray won out over antique white. Porcelain covered cast iron double sink ruled the day (but not a farm house sink - sadly for me, happily for C who nearly had a heart attack when I mentioned it at the very last minute because that requires a different kind of cabinet! But really we don't want a farm house sink because one big sink won't cut it in this kitchen and farm house sinks don't seem to come with double bowls. I had no idea.)

But the back splash. Goodness gracious the back splash. I have this vague idea of what I think the finished kitchen will look like but I do not have enough confidence in my visualization to finalize the decorative detail and the effect is paralyzing. Also. The choices. Do you have any idea how many back splash tiles exist?

We have an appointment with the therapist next Tuesday and it's not because we can't agree - it's because we need to overcome our lack of imagination. We really hope she can help.
